Social Studies Presents: Mike Simonetti [Italians Do It Better] & Kon [BBE]
Good Life Boston
July 25, 2014, 10:00pm
MIKE IS FROM NEW JERSEY.
But New York City is his playground. Mike Simonetti started out in the late 1980′s as a “club kid” in NYC, working at the legendary club Mars, bouncing between hardcore punk shows and the NYC club scene. He cut his teeth as a dj in NYC in the mid 1990′s, and was a resident at influential parties Motherfucker, Lit and Rubulad. His 7 hour sets at Rubulad became a thing of legend, playing well into the next afternoon during the free reign era of NYC. That time before Giuliani, 9/11, and the disneyfication of Manhattan, before people moved to Brooklyn. During this time Simonetti started Troubleman Unlimited, a highly influential record label that put bands like Black Dice, Panthers, Glass Candy, The Walkmen on the radar. It is around this time that he met Johnny Jewel , and released the first records by Glass Candy. Then came Italians Do It Better as an outlet for more dance oriented releases. "After Dark", the first release on Italians, was a benchmark in electronic music at the time, as it bridged the gap between house, disco, Italo, Krautrock, and even indie rock. IDIB originally was an outlet for Johnny’s many projects. Today the labels boasts over 40 releases.
Outside the record labels, Mike began releasing solo material- mostly limited edition disco edit 12″s. He also works regularly with Johnny Jewel, collaborating on edits. Together they released a compilation entitled Albuterol, and the highly influential (and now very rare) Hollywood Seven 12″. An edit of Alides Hidding of epic proportions. During this time the remix requests began as well. His remixes are known for the almost 180 degree take on a song, usually writing an entirely new track in the process. In 2011 Mike released his first extended ep of original music. Capricorn Rising was as varied as his dj sets, jumping from cosmic, Krautrock, house and techno. The album also featured guest vocals by Sam Sparro.
At the end of the day, Mike is a dj just as much as he is now a producer. Mikes dj sets are notorious for his “ebb and flow” style where there are multiple peaks and valleys throughout the night. His risk taking on the dancefloor is what makes it special. Contrary to the record labels namesake, he is more a house/techno dj than anything. He grew up on house music in the clubs. These days he plays all over the world, and holds regular parties in NYC at the best clubs (Output, Lebain and Bossa Nova Civic Club)
Joining us for the second time, KON the man with multitrack edits. The last year has been a pretty remarkable for the Dorchester Native. Album on BBE, Sought after edits on his own Star Time label, a Boiler Room appearence. And of course hours and hours of studio time and trips across the Globe. Yes, that guy gets around. As per usual we only expect the best from him and we are excited about what's about to happen this month when he gets to play with Mike.
This month also marks Resident Brenden Wesley's Birthday. Time to Celebrate!!!
